What Hedi Slimane leaving Saint Laurent means for fashion
Today in a statement released on The Business of Fashion, it was confirmed that the almost never seen shining star of fashion is leaving his helm at Saint Laurent. After taking his final bow at his LA Palladium show, Hedi Slimane's departure was finalised in a statement from the French house “What Yves Saint Laurent has achieved over the past four years represents a unique chapter in the history of the house. I am very grateful to Hedi Slimane, and the whole Yves Saint Laurent team, for having set the path that the house has successfully embraced, and which will grant longevity to this legendary brand.”
After making the brand one of the best selling in retail history which was highlighted through Slimane's $1 billion reported revenue last year, the brand became notorious for it's youthful take on the rock and roll era. The always psych rock inspired collections, had shown a movement in fashion from both a business perspective and a social one. With it's genderless aesthetic and punk nature, Slimane formed an iconic brand DNA for the 21st century fashion market that had historically never been done before. As one of the very few brands to ever cross the 'billion dollar mark' the French-Tunisian designer controversially but very cleverly created a new pathway for fashion, which he now leaves behind for someone else to takeover. Say goodbye to the sequins, the studs and the Slimane legacy.
