Everyones favorite Belgian took to Pitti Uomo for the first time, showcasing his much anticipated Spring Summer 2017 collection. Continuing his signature brand DNA of presenting his show in an industrial location, Simons also strategically placed mannequins around the audience with archival pieces. 48 year old Raf pays homage to the dangerously beautiful side of fashion throughout his latest line, with extreme playfulness of proportions, symmetry and silhouettes. The SS17 collection was also a double celebration, as the Antwerpen artist teamed up with the infamous photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe and his foundation The Mapplethorpe Foundation, hence all of the monochromatic images emblazoned on the clothes.
“I wanted to approach it like a museum show, or a gallery show. Which has been done very often when it comes to Mapplethorpe’s work. Cindy Sherman did it, David Hockney did it. But always in a gallery.” he continues “I am a fashion designer. I thought the biggest challenge would be to do it in my own environment.” Creating everything against the expected norm, Simons had the guests standing throughout his show, allowing a closer more personal gaze at his brillance. The 57 look collection consisted of juxtapositoned graphics, asymmetric knitwear and belts-turned neck accessories, all of which payed homage to Mapplethorpes work.
