What NERVE says about the digitally driven youth

An hour and a half long journey showcasing Dave Franco and Emma Roberts against the digital world, Nerve, is a depiction of societies millennial youth and their spiralling addiction to their somewhat sugar coated online presence. Based upon a digitalised, intensified version of truth or dare, Roberts and Franco both play a young and vulnerable representation of the 21st century adolescence who seek rebellion to ironically conform with societies expectations. “I find the internet to being definitely a frequently scary place,” 25 year old Emma Roberts explains “But the thing about this movie is that, because of that fear, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. What I found fascinating was that this game of ‘Nerve’ didn’t feel that farfetched. You could believe that it totally exists."

Nerve observes the scary narrative of the boundary less world online and the drastic measures that people go to for money, fame and social acceptation. Relevantly linking in with the radical outburst of Pokemon which Franco talks about “If you like Pokémon Go, you are gonna love our movie.”, directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost (who also created Catfish) go beyond the breaking point where people indulge in an adrenaline-fuelled virtual world and not the real one. The reoccurring question of 'Are you a watcher or a player' reinforces the point of voyeurism and the digital division of the world's obsession with others, all of which can be observed from cinema seats July 27th 2016.
