The frustrating limitation of summing up your life happenings in 140 characters is about to change. With the likes of Instagram and Snapchat now dominating the digital vortex, Twitter is now releasing new multimedia features such as being able to tweet with up to 10,000 characters. Having recently announced features such as voting and live videos, the social media platform is attempting to incline users on Twitter with only 316 millions users in 2015, in comparision to competitor, Instagram who have over 400 million monthly active accounts, according to Statista.
Twitter co-founder and CEO, Jack Dorsey stated “We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter,” Dorsey wrote in an image attached to a tweet published this afternoon. “And we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it. Instead, what if that text … was actually text? Text could be searched. Text that could be highlighted”. Although since the announcement of the news, some users have contradicted the 10,000 character limit stating that ‘Twitter even considering a 10K character limit is the best display of “I don’t understand my users” I’ve seen. Reports have said that Twitter will become a blogging platform, as apposed to being it’s quick, snappy self, leaving publishers and businesses wondering will people click the link to a main site, or will the freedom of expression in a 10,000 character limitation be enough?
